Chicago's boulevards were laid out wide on purpose, and a wide street holds a great deal of snow. Congressman Jonathan Jackson clears it where it counts for people on foot: the sidewalk, the corner where the crosswalk begins, the stairs and the landing at the door. Driveways and parking pads are plowed, and the ridge the street plow leaves across the apron gets cut back so a car can actually get out. Ice melt is spread where a foot lands first. A block where every walk is open is a block where a neighbor can still reach the bus, and in January that is not a small thing.
