Saturday morning in Chemung is quiet enough that you can hear a trimmer running three yards over. Orange ditch lilies lean out along the shoulder, somebody's dog barks twice, and J & J Escobar Landscaping is working its way up the block with the mower, then the line trimmer, then the blower. The care shows at the small stuff — around the mailbox post, the downspout, the swing set legs, the seam where the drive meets the grass and most cuts get sloppy. Nothing is left behind but the smell of cut grass hanging in the warm air. By noon the yard looks the way a yard is supposed to look on a summer weekend, and everybody gets the rest of the day back.
