East of town the ground finally quits being flat and climbs into the bluffs above Belleville; west of it the water lies close under everything. Green Valley Lawn Service works the green in between — mowing spring's first fast growth, edging, trimming, and clearing winter's litter out of the beds. April is loud with red-winged blackbirds, and the lakes at Frank Holten State Recreation Area nearby hold the sky like a plate. A yard brought back from March into something even and bright is a good way to start a year. Centreville and the surrounding towns stay on that schedule right through to the fall cleanups.
