The little towns run together out here — Crainville, Cambria, Carterville — one yard at a time along the same few roads. Warm weather means the steady loop of mowing, trimming and edging, week after week, until the ground finally slows down toward November. Cold weather means something rarer and sharper: a snow or a sleet that shuts the county down for a day or two, and driveways and walkways that have to be pushed clear and salted before anybody tries them. Both jobs come down to timing, and timing out here is mostly just knowing the roads. It is a good feeling to finish a street and look back down the length of it.
