Two calendars run through this town. From April to October the mowers go — cutting, trimming, edging, holding the lawns of Carol Stream's subdivisions even and green through the humid middle of an Illinois year. From November on it is blades and shovels and spreaders: driveways opened wide enough to back out without a second thought, front walks taken down to concrete, salt laid before the afternoon melt refreezes at dusk. Out here on the flat land west of the city the turn between those two seasons can happen inside a single week. The ballfields over at Armstrong Park go from mown grass to snow cover almost overnight. Both halves of the year get the same attention.
