On a June evening in Carlock the light lies flat across the corn and a mown yard is the one bit of geometry for a mile in any direction. Boitnott's Lawn & Landscaping works the village and the farmsteads around it — mowing, trimming, edging, mulch in the beds, and shrubs kept to a shape. McLean County's black soil grows turf the way it grows everything else, which means a weekly cut from May into September and no arguing about it. Fall cleanups take the leaves and the spent beds ahead of the first real wind. Around here you can read a well-kept yard from the section road, and people do.
