Some nights a band comes off Lake Michigan and Calumet takes four inches in its sleep, streetlights gone soft and blue above it. Scott's Sanitation and Snow works those nights — plowing driveways and lots, opening walks and steps, laying salt so the melt does not come back as glass at sunrise. The good version of this job is invisible: you wake, look out the window, and the pavement is simply there. Storms keep no calendar, so the work goes when the sky says go, however late that turns out to be. Out here that is most of the winter, and the routes are known by heart.
