Out in western Kane County the ground around Burlington is black and heavy, and in April it gives off the smell you only get from soil waking up. Axolotl landscaping starts its year right there — winter debris raked out, beds opened, the first mow laid down while the fields are still bare. Through summer it becomes a weekly circuit of mowing, trimming and edging on village lots and country places alike, some with a windbreak on one side and half the sky on the other. Fall turns the whole thing back into cleanup work, leaves and stalks cleared before the freeze. The mark of a good day is a lawn cut even from the road to the treeline.
