The first heavy snow of the year usually finds Blount at night, quiet as anything, filling the section roads a half inch at a time until the fence lines disappear. A-10 Excavation is out in it, plow lights swinging at the ends of long farm lanes, opening a way from a house to a blacktop that will not see a truck for hours yet. Drives get opened wide, not just wide enough, and the piles get set clear of the sight lines at the road. Where a slope holds ice, treatment goes down and gets checked again later. It is cold, unhurried work with one plain measure of success: somebody makes it to town in the morning.
