In January the nursery rows stand dormant and the ground is locked tight, and the trucks at Penn Landscaping and Sunburst Nursery turn to the other half of a Bloomington year. Snow removal here means plowing drives and lots, clearing walks all the way down to the concrete, and spreading salt where a slope or a north-facing step will hold ice past midday. Storms cross McLean County with nothing at all to slow them, so the work starts while the snow is still coming down and finishes before town is properly awake. Sunrise on a cleared drive — the pile squared off at the lawn's edge, the mailbox reachable, the walk dry — is the picture worth working for. Winter runs long out here, and it goes easier when the pavement is open.
