Big Rock is a village the corn grows right up to, a handful of streets set down in Kane County's open farm country. Duran Landscaping keeps the lawns here, mowing the deep yards that run back toward the fields and trimming until the line between grass and gravel is a clean one. In June the light stays late over that flat ground west of the Fox, and a yard cut on a long evening holds its stripes right through the week. There is real satisfaction in the last pass — the mower shut off, the smell of cut grass drifting toward Big Rock Creek, the walks blown bare. Lawn work in a place this small happens in plain sight of the neighbors, and it shows.
