A clipper drops down out of Canada, crosses the open country west of Chicago, and by midnight it is snowing sideways over Roosevelt Road. R & M Snow Plowing runs those nights, plowing drives and lots, clearing walks and steps, breaking open the hard ridge the street plow leaves behind. Berwyn's driveways are long and narrow and its alleys drift shut in a hurry, so timing is most of the job. There is a specific pleasure in the sight of black pavement at dawn with the whole world still white around it. That is what the truck is for.
