The old brick cottages on Belleville's side streets sit close to the curb and save their generosity for out back — deep, shaded yards you only ever see if you are invited. Backyards Lawn and Landscape spends its weeks in that hidden half of town, where the mowing lines have to thread fence corners, clotheslines and a tomato patch two doors from the alley. In June the air back there smells like warm brick and cut grass at the same time. The aim is a lawn that reads even from the kitchen window and finishes tight against the flower beds. The routes cover Belleville and its neighbors in Swansea, Shiloh and Freeburg.
