By October the tamarack turn on the ridges above Saint Maries and the old mill town takes on a low gold light that lasts maybe three weeks. Phillips Northern Resources spends that stretch putting yards to bed for the year — a final mow, edges cut back clean, leaves and clippings pulled off lawns and drives. The rest of the season it is steady maintenance: mowing, trimming, edging, keeping the grass even from the river flats up to the streets on the hill. Benewah County ground grows hard and fast, and staying out in front of it is the whole job. The area covered runs from Saint Maries to Plummer, Tensed and the towns strung along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes.
