The morning after rain on the upper Snake River Plain, the ground gives a little underfoot and you can smell the soil right through the grass. Underground landscaping is named for what happens down there — roots, moisture, the feeding that decides whether a Rexburg lawn holds green in August or goes thin and pale. Above the line they mow, trim and edge on a steady cycle; below it, fertilization and weed control do the slower work. Both halves show up in the same place: a yard that looks solid and unbroken from the curb. In a valley where good turf takes effort to keep, that evenness is worth the trouble.
