The Pend Oreille River slows into long, easy bends west of town, and the road that follows it out toward Oldtown runs right along the water most of the way. Northern Lakes Tree Service knows that stretch as well from a chainsaw as from a plow blade — a hard freeze followed by wet snow is what brings a limb down across a driveway out there, and clearing the snow off first is often step one before anything else gets hauled away. This crew's plow route follows the river-road properties one at a time, working driveways that back right up against the bank, where the ground stays wetter and the snow packs differently than it does in town. Some mornings it's a clean plow and nothing more; other mornings there's a downed branch waiting at the end of a driveway from the night before. Either way, the river road gets opened in the same order every storm, the water never far from the plow blade.
