A lot of Priest River's driveways don't end at a house right away — they run a quarter mile or more back through stands of fir and tamarack before the house even comes into view, and that's the terrain JD Forest Management works through all winter. The snow falls differently under a forest canopy than it does out in the open: less all at once, more drifting in from the gaps between trees, piling deepest where a stand thins out. This crew handles that pattern the way they'd size up a timber stand any other season, clearing the long forested driveways stretch by stretch rather than in one open pass. Out past the edge of town, where the ridgelines close in tighter than they do along the valley floor, that's often the only way in or out until the plow gets there. The whole run of driveways back through the timber ends up open again by the last pass of the day.
