Snow and Dirt LLC's name says plainly what a storm becomes once the pavement runs out toward the gravel frontage roads heading for the Snake River plain: snow packed down over dirt, a surface harder to read and harder to clear than any paved driveway in town. The crew works that edge-of-town ground, plowing rural driveways and access lanes where the roadbed itself is unpaved and prone to rutting if a blade runs too low. Getting the depth right matters more out here than almost anywhere else the crew works, since scraping too deep tears up gravel that then has to be dealt with come spring thaw. Wind across the open plain packs these lanes into hard, wave-like drifts that can take two or three passes to break through cleanly. It is a stretch of Pocatello's edge that most people driving the highway never see clearly, let alone in a fresh snow, and clearing it is as much about the ground underneath as the snow on top.
