East of town, where Highway 30 climbs into the Portneuf Gap, the ranch drives and rural approach roads run long and ungraded, often the last ground anyone gets to after a storm. Barhoff Excavation runs heavy equipment built for exactly that kind of ground, pushing three-foot drifts off half-mile driveways before daylight so people can get out for a milking or a morning shift in town. The same machines that move earth in summer get fitted with plow blades come winter, clearing gravel and dirt lanes that a lighter truck would just get stuck in. Snow out here doesn't fall so much as it drifts, piling against fence lines and cut banks in shapes that change overnight, so the work is never quite the same route twice. It is a cold, early job, done with headlights on and breath fogging the cab glass, and it gets the valley's back roads open before the sun is fully up.
