About B

Main Street's brick fronts are still holding last night's cool when B gets started, the mower off the trailer before the first pickups roll toward the highway. The name is one letter and the work is about that plain: mow it, edge it, trim what the deck cannot reach, clear the walks, go. Payette lawns run small and square in the older blocks, hemmed by sidewalks that show every wobble, so the line has to be true. By mid-morning the heat is coming up off the concrete and half a street's yards are already finished — quiet, tidy right up to the borders. It is unshowy work, and it makes a block look cared for, which is reason enough to do it well.
