Northside Welding spends most of the year with a torch in hand, but Cassia County winters bring the shop's trucks out onto Paul's open farm roads instead, plows bolted to the same frames the crew built and repaired all summer. Out here the land runs flat between irrigation canals and fields of potatoes and sugar beets, and a north wind can pile snow into a farm lane faster than it falls from a still sky. The work is driveway and farm-road snow removal around Paul, running the long straight stretches between those same fields until gravel shows through again. Equipment built by hand holding up against a hard freeze earns its keep twice over, welds tested by cold instead of load for once. By the time frost has thickened on the sagebrush at the field edges, the roads into town are already clear.
