The Silver Valley keeps its own hours. Mountains stand close on both sides of Osburn, so the sun arrives late over the ridge and slips away early, and the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River runs cold and green straight through the middle of town. Grass gets a short, intense run here — cedar-shaded, damp, growing hard from June into September — and Kellberg's works the whole of it: mowing, trimming, edging, fertilizing, weed control, and the cleanups that bracket spring and fall. Yards run narrow between the old mining streets and the hillside, which means hand work, tight lines and a good deal of trimmer time. When the valley is that green and a lawn is cut clean to every edge, the place looks exactly like itself.
