Lewis Excavation runs its equipment year-round on the open ground around New Plymouth, and in winter that means trading dirt work for snow, pushing drifts off the long farm lanes that run between the fields at the edge of town. This stretch of ground is flat and exposed, and a hard wind can pile a lane shut overnight even after the snow itself has stopped falling. The crew handles driveway and farm-access snow removal, machine work suited to the long straight stretches around the fields more than tight residential curbs. Cutting a lane clean through open farmland while it's still dark out has its own satisfaction, ground that was buried at dusk laid bare again by morning. Heavy equipment built for moving dirt turns out to move snow just as well.
