A handful of yards on Nampa's higher, drier ground are terraced in stone, built to hold a slope the way a retaining wall holds back a hillside anywhere else in the valley. Summit & Stone Landscapes tends those terraced properties in winter the same way it built them - working with the stone instead of around it, clearing snow off each level of a stepped yard so the walls underneath stay dry and sound. It's slower work than a flat driveway, moving level to level with a shovel where a plow blade can't reach, but every terrace coming clean in order, top to bottom, is its own reward. On a clear, cold morning, with frost still lining the mortar joints between the stones, a freshly cleared terrace looks almost built for winter rather than just surviving it. The crew finishes at the bottom, at the driveway proper, the one part of the property a plow can actually reach.
