South of Nampa, the water at Lake Lowell draws thousands of geese down out of a gray winter sky every year, and the roads circling the Deer Flat refuge are some of the quietest in the county once the birds have arrived for the season. Resource Land Care, Inc. covers that outer ring of Nampa - the properties backing up to farmland and refuge land alike - clearing driveways where a plow route can otherwise run for a long, empty stretch between houses. That work carries its own stillness: no traffic yet, no neighbors out, just geese calling somewhere off toward the water and a blade working against gravel or concrete. The crew treats every property on that route the same, whether it's a single acre lot or a longer stretch of driveway shared by a couple of houses. By midmorning, with light finally breaking properly over the refuge, the loop is done and the land looks like it's just waiting for spring.
