Goodman Excavation and Hauling spends most of the year moving dirt out of Middleton's fields and building sites, so when snow piles up instead, the job changes less than it sounds like it should — it's still a matter of loading, hauling, and clearing ground down to what it should be. Big lots and long driveways around town get the same treatment as a construction site: plowed low, piled where it won't block a gate, hauled off if the pile gets too big to leave standing. Middleton's farm lanes run long and straight between fields, and a plow truck working one before dawn throws up its own small storm of powder against the dark. There's satisfaction in watching a lot that was buried at midnight sit clear and gray by the time the sun's up over the valley. The same equipment that moves earth all summer spends its winter moving snow instead, one property at a time.
