McCall sits at the edge of Payette Lake in country that measures winter in feet, not inches, and by February the roofs along the lakeshore and up through the surrounding pines can be carrying more snow than the rafters underneath ever bargained for. Ice Dam Bros works those roofs and the ice that backs up behind the drifts, breaking the dams loose before they push meltwater back under shingles built for exactly this kind of weather and still, some winters, needing help. The cold up here has its own hush — snow squeaking underfoot, breath showing even at noon — and watching water finally run clean off an eave instead of pooling against it never quite stops feeling worthwhile. It's work that matters most in the darkest months, when the lake is locked in ice and the pines stand bowed white clear down to McCall's own Main Street.
