Come October the tamaracks on the ridges above the North Fork turn the color of struck brass, and everything green in McCall begins putting itself away for the year. Franz Witte McCall works that turn deliberately: final mowings dropped low, leaves and needles cleared off the turf before snow can press them flat into it, fertilizer laid down to hold roots through a long white winter. Near the Lardo bridge the river runs loud and clear, and the lawns along that stretch get their edges cut sharp one last time. It is quiet work, done in cold air, and the payoff arrives months later in whatever greens up first. McCall, Donnelly and New Meadows are all on the map.
