Farther back from Kamiah, where the gravel roads climb away from the river and the timber closes in thick enough to block the sky, the cabins sit far enough apart that a porch light left on overnight is sometimes the only sign anyone else is out there in January. Sasquatch Forestry Mulching runs those backcountry roads, clearing miles of gravel and the driveways at the end of them for the handful of people who stay through winter instead of closing up and leaving. A storm that drops a foot in town can drop twice that up in the timber, where the canopy holds snow and then lets it go all at once onto a road cleared just an hour before. Reaching all the way back to a cabin at the end of one of those roads, past drifts that have had all winter to build, is a different scale of job than anything closer to Main Street. For the people who live back there, the plow truck is sometimes the only vehicle that passes for days.
