Juliaetta sits down in the Potlatch River canyon, basalt bluffs rising steep on both sides and holding fog in some mornings until nearly noon, long after the Camas Prairie above has burned clear in the sun. Fliger Construction clears the short, steep driveways that climb those canyon walls, ground where a plow works an incline as much as a distance, and where ice under the fog can linger on a north-facing grade for days at a stretch. The town is small enough that the work stays personal — a cleared lane to the grain elevator, a driveway up to a house tucked against the bluff, the stretch of Main Street in front of the old brick storefronts. The canyon keeps its own weather, cold and shadow lingering here long after the ridgetops above have gone bare and dry. Getting a car safely up one of those grades before the ice sets for the day counts as a real accomplishment in a town this size.
