October turns the old street maples of Idaho Falls gold and hands the grass its second wind — cool nights, low sun, roots busy while the top growth finally slows down. Turfco spends that stretch aerating and overseeding and putting down the fall feeding that decides how a lawn wakes up in April. Leaves come off, beds get cleared, the last cut goes a little lower, and the yard is put to bed before the ground locks up for the winter. The rest of the year it is the weekly rounds: mowing, trimming, edging and staying ahead of the weeds, on a schedule you could set a watch by. A lawn looks the way it does in May because of what somebody did to it in the fall.
