Horseshoe Bend takes its name from the curve the Payette River cuts through the canyon there, and in winter that canyon holds onto snow and shadow longer than the open country on either side, Highway 55 winding along the water beneath walls of rock and pine. Double D DirtWorx & Underground clears driveways carved into that canyon terrain, where a flat spot for a house is often cut straight into the hillside and the snow has nowhere to go but off the pavement and over the edge. A driveway climbing a canyon wall is its own kind of job — narrow in places, the river running cold and fast just below — and getting it bare again after a storm counts as a real morning's work. The routes reach up the highway toward Banks and Garden Valley and back down toward Boise, following the same river the whole way. Once the canyon shadow lifts off the road, the driveways above it are already clear.
