Late in the day, once a Heyburn storm has finally let up, the windbreak rows of poplar and locust lining the farm fields outside town carry the whole afternoon's snowfall in their bare branches, bowed low over the driveways and lanes running alongside them. Scott Ganoe Tree & Landscape clears those driveways out from under the same trees, working while the light stretches long and orange over the Snake River bottoms and the last plow trucks of the day pass on the county roads. A driveway opened up beneath a row of snow-heavy branches, low winter sun coming sideways through them, marks the close of a long storm day about as well as anything. The routes run from town out toward Rupert and Declo, following the same windbreaks and the same farm lanes. By dusk the driveways sit bare again, ready for whoever needs in or out before dark.
