Highway 95 through Hayden takes its share of storms blowing down off the Selkirks, and the work often begins well after dark — headlights catching snow sideways, the blade down, the road otherwise empty but for a few porch lights back in the neighborhoods. Mr Plow keeps those hours, clearing driveways off the highway frontage and through the streets around Hayden Lake while most of the town is asleep. Plowing at midnight with snow still coming down has its own kind of solitude, just the scrape of the blade on pavement and the Selkirks somewhere out there past the lake, invisible in the dark. Morning arrives to a bare driveway and a clear walk, no shovel required before the drive to work. The same overnight routes stretch toward Dalton Gardens and Rathdrum, wherever the storm hit hardest.
