Evenings at Gem Island, the ball fields along the Payette sit blanketed and empty, floodlights off until spring practice starts up again. Storms here tend to roll through late in the day and finish overnight, so the real work happens after dark and again before the school bus routes start moving. A driveway gets pushed clear to the garage, the walk to the front door scraped down, and the mound at the end of the driveway broken up so it does not freeze into a curb of its own by morning. Somewhere between those two passes, the neighborhood around the park goes from buried to ordinary again.
