A storm that dumps overnight can leave the interstate itself in decent shape by morning thanks to the state crews, but the smaller lots and side streets feeding onto it are a different story, and that's where this crew's route runs. Getting a commuter lot scraped and salted before six means the first cars of the morning pull in and out without spinning a tire against a curb of packed snow. The lake sends up enough moisture that storms here can keep dropping snow well past when they've stopped everywhere else in the valley, so a lot cleared at five sometimes needs checking again by seven. Working a lot alone in the dark, hours before anyone else in a town this size is even awake, has its own strange quiet to it.
