The canyon rim itself holds a different kind of quiet in winter, wind working the snow into drifts along the fence lines while the river keeps running dark and open far below. Clearing a farm lane out here means reading where the wind has piled the snow rather than where it simply fell, and the crew works those drifts the same way it works a foundation cut — steadily, one stretch at a time, until the ground shows through. By the day's end the lane runs open from the county road all the way to the barn.
