Closer to the river, where Burley's older streets are shaded by big cottonwoods and the town park runs along the Snake River greenbelt, snow gathers differently than it does out on the open farmland — caught in branches, shading walkways, melting and refreezing in the patches where tree cover blocks the sun for days after a storm. This crew knows those shaded stretches by heart, clearing driveways and sidewalks that stay icy long after a sunnier block down the street has dried out completely. A limb heavy with wet snow is its own hazard, and part of working these tree-lined blocks well is watching what's overhead as much as what's underfoot. Down along the greenbelt, the paths stay popular even in the cold, and keeping them walkable means somebody can still get a morning walk in along the river without picking through ice. By late morning, with the sun finally reaching the shaded side of the street, the driveways cleared early are already bone dry while the untouched ones are still slick.
