Just west of town the land drops away into the Snake River Canyon, where cold springs pour straight out of the basalt walls year-round and keep a strange pocket of green alive even when everything above the rim is frozen solid. This crew works the properties along that rim, clearing driveways that end abruptly at a canyon overlook and walkways that ice over fast in the shadow the canyon walls throw across them by early afternoon. The irony of a sprinkler outfit clearing snow isn't lost on anyone here — the same water that feeds Buhl's trout ponds all summer turns every low spot along the rim into a skating rink come January. Getting a driveway safe right up to the edge of a two-hundred-foot drop takes a different kind of attention than clearing one on a flat block downtown. By late afternoon, with the canyon already sliding into shadow, the rim-side driveways cleared here are the last ones still catching any sun at all.
