Aloha Gardening spends most of the year tending North End garden beds tucked between the old trees that give Boise its nickname, and in the quiet after a foothills snowfall, the same beds and the paths between them need clearing instead of weeding. Along Warm Springs Avenue, where geothermal heat sometimes keeps the old sidewalks bare even as the yards around them go white, the work is uneven and particular: clear here, barely touch there, depending on what the ground underneath is doing. Up toward the foothills the snow tends to sit longer and heavier than it does down in the valley, and gardens on that side of the neighborhood need a more determined pass. This is careful, plant-adjacent work: clearing a path without burying the perennials underneath it in a pile of shoveled snow. By the time the morning quiet gives way to the neighborhood's usual foot traffic, the walks are clear and the garden beds sit undisturbed under whatever fell overnight.
