Asphalt holds cold differently than gravel or dirt, and Klingler Asphalt, LLC knows the lots it has paved around Blackfoot well enough to know exactly where the ice will form first after a storm. Working through the night while Main Street's storefronts sit dark, the crew clears the black surface back to itself, lot by lot, so the ice underneath doesn't get the chance to bond overnight. By the time shopkeepers arrive before sunrise against the gray light coming off the plain, the parking lots this crew handles are already scraped to bare blacktop. It is a strange kind of continuity, laying a surface in July and clearing it in January, knowing its low spots and its crown from having built it. Out past the edge of downtown, where the pavement runs out into gravel and then field, the plowing gets simpler, but here in the heart of Blackfoot it is a practiced routine.
