Cap Con works the kind of Blackfoot mornings when fog sits low over the Wolverine Canal and nobody can see past the end of Main Street. The crew treats a snowfall the way it treats a foundation pour: mark the lines first, then clear to them, driveway by driveway, until the edges are square against the white. Out past the grain elevators the fields hold their snow in long flat sheets, but in town the plow work is close and careful, working around parked cars and porch steps. By midmorning, when the fog finally lifts off the Snake River Plain, the cleared driveways stand out against everything still buried around them. It is exacting work, done block by block, through the coldest stretch of an eastern Idaho winter.
