Below Ashton, the Henry's Fork drops over Upper and Lower Mesa Falls into a canyon that never quite freezes solid, and on the coldest mornings mist off that open water drifts up onto the plateau and rimes every fence post and mailbox in white before the sun clears the Tetons. Swiss Precision Enterprises starts its routes in that same cold mist, working driveways and access roads on ground that can hold a foot of dry, sifted snow from a single overnight system blown in off the high country. The crew clears in tight, even passes — one line down, one line back — leaving edges straight along fields that grow seed potatoes come summer and sit stark white and empty most of the winter instead. Grain elevators and the old rail depot mark the middle of town, landmarks the plow trucks pass more than once before the day is through, cutting the same lines they cut the week before. Fence posts hold that rime long after the driveways below town have already gone back down to bare gravel, waiting on the next system to roll in off the plateau.
