Above the flat of the Big Lost River basin, the ground around Arco climbs fast into timbered draws and canyon mouths where pine holds snow long after the valley floor has gone bare, and that's the country Forest land solutions works. The crew clears access roads and driveways cut back into those foothills, ground where a single storm off the Lost River Range can drop more snow in one canyon than falls on the flat the same night. West of town the basin runs out toward the old reactor grounds where this valley once lit its own streets by nuclear power before most of the country had the chance, but up among the trees the light works differently — filtered, slower to melt off, holding blue shadow well past noon. Getting a blade or a loader up a switchbacked driveway through timber takes a different feel than clearing a flat farm lane, and the crew works it one rig at a time, driveway by driveway, along the timber line above the ranches. There are still hours of daylight left on the valley floor once the crew works its way back down out of the trees, enough to finish the rest of the route below before dark.
