Before the grain elevator's string lights blink on above Aberdeen's rail spur, Hoe Works already has a plow blade down, cutting a clean line along streets that lie flat and wide across the Snake River Plain. Out here the wind doesn't drift in gently — it travels the open miles between pivot circles, piling drifts against fence rows and potato-cellar doors with equal indifference. The crew works driveways, farm lanes, and parking lots on the same ground that turns green with potatoes and grain once the canals run again each spring, clearing what the season buries so the town beneath it can keep moving. Geese still winter a few miles off on the American Falls Reservoir, and on the stillest mornings their calling carries clean across the frozen fields while the last lot gets scraped down to blacktop. It is early, patient work fitted to a farm town's own clock — walks open before the school bell, driveways clear before the first truck backs out for the day.
