Madison County's hills roll harder than most of Iowa, and the roads out toward the covered bridges climb and dip enough that a snowfall turns them treacherous fast. Anchored Walls clears the driveways along those hillside routes first, working its way down toward the limestone courthouse square at the center of Winterset. Retaining walls and sloped lots are where the crew's eye for grade pays off in winter too — a driveway pitching down toward a garage gets a slower plow pass and extra salt compared to a flat one. Walks around the square get opened up to the stone underneath, since the old limestone storefronts don't forgive an icy step. By midmorning the square is clear and the hill roads out toward the bridges are passable again, at least until the next system rolls through Madison County.
