Downtown Waterloo crosses the Cedar River on three different bridges, and below the dam on a hard-freeze morning the open water still throws enough fog to blur the far bank before the sun burns it off. MS Services, LLC works the sidewalks and lots around that stretch of downtown, clearing the walks along the RiverLoop and the parking areas behind the storefronts before the first offices open for the day. River fog here does something the drier neighborhoods further from the water don't see as often: it clings to the pavement overnight and freezes into a slick glaze that a plain snowfall wouldn't leave behind, so the sidewalks need salt as much as they need a shovel. The crew clears driveways and lots on the blocks back from the river, then works its way toward the water where the ice problem is worst, scraping and salting until the walks along the bridges are safe to cross. By the time downtown starts filling with cars, the fog has usually lifted and the walks sit dry under it.
