Walford is small enough that the grain elevator by the old rail line is still the tallest thing in town, and the streets around it run out quickly into the rolling farm ground that leads east toward the limestone bluffs above the Cedar River. SK Property Care works those in-town blocks and the driveways along the county roads alike, and a wet, heavy snow off a warm front tends to hit here harder than the powder further north, packing down fast on driveways and needing to come off before it freezes into a solid sheet. Midday is often when the real work starts, once a system has finished dumping and the temperature is still hovering just above the point where slush turns to ice. The crew scrapes driveways clean, clears sidewalks along Walford's short main stretch, and gets salt down on the walks near the elevator and the crossroads store before the afternoon cold sets back in. By late afternoon, the low sun catches clear pavement all through town, with only the bluffs to the east still holding their snow.
