Toledo holds the Tama County courthouse on its square, and the old shade trees planted around that lawn carry enough weight in their branches after an ice storm to close a sidewalk on their own. Mario's tree service clears that storm debris off the square and the streets ringing it in the same pass it clears the snow, since a fallen limb left under fresh snowfall has a way of disappearing until somebody's tire finds it. The rest of town sits close by, a grid of older houses shaded by trees just as heavy as the ones downtown, and the same ice that bends a branch on the square bends one in a backyard three blocks over. Winter mornings here start with the courthouse dome just visible through bare limbs before the crew's even reached the first driveway.
