Sully sits out on open Jasper County prairie, flat enough that a plain wind can pick up loose snow off a harvested field and lay it back down in a drift across the road half a mile on. Snowman Snow Plows runs that stretch of county blacktop along with the town's own tidy grid of streets, where the Dutch-settled town's brick storefronts and church spires stand close together against the open ground around them. Drifts here don't so much fall as travel, sliding across a field in a stiff wind and piling up wherever a fence line or a grove breaks the flow. The crew reads the wind as much as the forecast, since a foot of snow lying flat in a field can turn into three feet against somebody's garage door by morning. Open country presses in from every side out here, and the town itself is the only thing standing still while everything around it drifts.
